Actually, the younger the quinces, the better it works, as they have more pectin when they are under=ripe. However, I don't think it really matters, as it is delicious either way! Lancashire cheese - I miss that....

Hi,

I used quinces that had been hanging around over Xmas & were perhaps a bit past their best? Paste finished a deep brown, no red or rosiness which is a shame. Otherwise exactly as your recipe - perhaps I'd let it catch and caramalise a touch.

However the result is excellent, has a sort of 'Tawny Port' taste, rich and with a background quince flavour. Not floral in any way, but very more-ish. I'm thinking an English Stilton or a mature Lancashire cheese will match.

Hello,

I stumbled across your site and am now OBSESSED with the fabric at the top of the April 13th, 2011 blog. It's a gold silk with what look to be velvet pink, red, and white flowers.

Any chance you know who makes this fabric so I can order some?

Thank you for your GREAT ideas on decorating!

Wow - how fabulous. I lived in South Africa for a couple of years so I can just picture it. What a great idea to have limited sales like that. Hope you continue to flourish!

The shelf is bolted through the wall (there is just a store-room next door) with long metal rods that extend into the wood, so it's pretty hard core. You can get invisible supports underneath (brackets etc) centrally - but I was being very purist at the time!)

Your bathroom is absolutely stunning! I have been wanting to achieve a similar look for my own bathroom, specifically with the floating shelf + basin. However, I cannot seem to find any information regarding where to find a shelf like that or how to mount it without visible supports. Can you tell me how that shelf was mounted to the wall, and does it really support the weight of the sinks, and water, and even leaning on the shelf? Again, great Job on the bathroom!

Dear Clare
Hello Clare.... We are soulmates! My friend, Elize and I recently started a small business called Painted Ladies (a Painted Lady is a butterfly which starts off ugly and ends up beautiful). We source, buy, paint and re-sell old furniture at really good prices. We haunt auctions, junk shops, pawn shops etc and are always on the look out for a faded beauty with potential which we can rescue, re-invent and re-sell. As neither of us wish to be stuck in a shop all day, we hold a "Two Day Sale" every couple of months. The first one was a huge success and we are currently working on the next one for November 2011. We live in Bethlehem in South Africa. Keep up the good work. Love what you do and nice to meet someone who "speaks our language". Tracey Sterley, South Africa
